I Give You This Moment

A quiet morning after rain.
The door open to the mild air.
Over the fence, the warbling
of a lone magpie, briefly, twice,
flute-like melody conjuring
his unseen form. Meanwhile
the orange trumpet creepers
suspend themselves down palings
like bells, or clusters of fruit.

Note: Natalie Goldberg, author of wonderful books for writers, exhorts her readers: "Give me this moment!' meaning, sit down and write whatever's in front of you, whatever's going on right now. So of course I thought of her when I did so on this occasion, and that gave me my title.

  1. A lovely moment. I am seeking such moments, trying to find my poetic spirit. July/August tends to be a dark season for me. Too many yesterdays crowd in.

  3. The gift of a beautiful moment - magpie and orange creeper vine....lovely. I like Golberg's suggestion, the gift of a moment.

  4. You make the trumpet vine move like the sound of the magpie. A wonderful suspended moment.

  12. And what a wonderful moment to give - the orange drew me in and each sound, sense and feeling held me through every 'momentful' word - very good to read your work again and love the new blog design

    1. Oh, not a new blog design, Jae – a different blog. I keep this one for my 'small stones': pieces of 'mindful writing'. This month I'm doing at least one daily as part of a group thing called Awake August, which I decided to join in.

    2. Aha - that explains it - how special to have different jars of words in the ether - may your August be awake

  15. I love the carefully structured shape of this knowing piece - struck me as very mindful and somewhat oriental in its sensibility. Really enjoyed it Rosemary...

    1. Oh, that's good to know. All those years of trying to write haiku must have paid off! Actually I think both haiku and 'same stones' require the same kind of focus on the external world.

  17. That first line really grabs me... the quiet after a rain. There's nothing quite like it. The silence. That wonderful smell. A sense of purity. Really enjoyed this.

Very truly describes how one is very much aware of a magpie's presence - heard but not seen!
