Sekhmet Figurine

A figurine of Sekhmet sits upright by my desk. Her shadow is shaped like a cat.

(I started to write a small stone but it grew into this longer poem. Then I came back here and wrote a different small stone.)

Walking and Looking

Sunday afternoon
this quiet street
is lined with cars

a long shadow
crosses my photograph:
me

I point my camera
the ibis in the playground
vanish from the picture

coming up the hill
the gladdies are out
in all the gardens

red gladioli
weigh down their stems
late afternoon

the shadow of the hoop pine
crosses the path
ahead of me

Coexistence

Shrill birds
make a flurry in the trees.
My cat, ignoring them,
sprawls in the sun
washing her paw.
