Hanging out the washing,
I hear, ‘Click, click’ on the fence posts,
turn and see green face, red beak
pecking at the vines, not a bit afraid
of my proximity. But by the time
I fetch the camera — gone.
I had to get the bird book out.
It was a Scaly Breasted Lorikeet,
my first. (I deplore the name.
Those ‘scales’ are bright feathers.)

You know, it's the same way where I am too! I've seen lots of birds lately but it's not even spring! I like the name lorikeet but I too don't like "scaly-breasted." It sounds like a dragon's description instead.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this find! Makes me wish I have a bird book to find the names of all the birds I see!
Also, thanks so much for visiting my stones blog! Much appreciated, Rosemary! :)
Yes, lorikeet is a pretty word. We have lots of rainbow lorikeets in this area, pretty things with a pretty name which they live up to. At first glance I thought the green one was one of them, so I guess there is a strong resemblance apart from colour.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your stoned blog! :)
Oh, ha ha ha, sorry about the typo! I promise your blog does NOT read as if you were stoned!
