This Notebook I'm Using

My adopted brother
gave me this book
almost three years ago
on the first of January.

The paper was made from bark
in western Nepal, by an ancient method.
It will last a long time.

On the cover is a mandala,
symbol of impermanence.

I record in it moments of life.

  1. So beautiful! Both the gift and the words.

  2. That impermanence echoed in the last line...so finely written! Loved it.

  3. Poetry is a little like chasing down shifting thoughts and wrestling it to hold still for a picture.

  4. So much meaning beneath your words! What a beautiful book. And I hope you fill it up with beautiful words.

  5. What a beautiful notebook.

It feels horrible, doesn't it? Our treasured moments really being meaningless in the scheme of things ... I write down all sorts of stories and take thousands of pictures, hoping one day my children will savor their childhood as adults and appreciate my documentation. But in all likelihood, they won't have time or interest. :(

  9. I love the notebook, and would love to be able to be a notebook person, but I simply cannot... my notebook is my keyboard.

  10. I love the penultimate and last stanzas best. The contrast between the two.

  12. What a beautiful place to record those moments. Alas. such an object would sit and gather dust. My keyboard is my notebook.

  13. I confess that my notebook is usually my keyboard too, hence this notebook pictured has been languishing for three years, after a couple of entries. So now, while I am on holiday, I have decided it will be perfect for recording 'small stones'. My plan is to fill it up at last, and give it as a gift back to the adopted brother.

  14. Humans can't quite understand impermanance so they have that need to write it down...well some of us perhaps! The book looks magnificent Rosemary.

  15. A lovely layered piece. The gift, the mandala symbol, the manner in which you have chosen to respect that symbol with your entries ... and really, all the stuff-of-life that is part of that notebook. Wonderful writing!

  20. It's beautiful. Nice that you record your moments. I have a book my daughter gave me some months ago. I haven't made time to write in it, but you serve as inspiration.
