Flowers x 3

In Day 20 of the April Poem A Day challenge at 'imaginary garden with real toads' the prompt is to write three short pieces on flowers, three lines or fewer.  I've posted them to this blog as I regard them all as 'small stones'. The first two are also haiku: one with the traditional 5-7-5 syllables, the other a short-long-short 'English language haiku'. I have used my own photos.

I'm also linking this post to Poets United's Poetry Pantry #447

blare bright orange against grey
twigs, palings, winter

roses red for passion
orange for joy

Back Yard, July

Winter sunshine brings
orange trumpet vines
curling and waterfalling
over my fence,
their tubular blooms
upthrusting, pointing towards
deep blue sky,
cold bright light.

Contemplating the Unfamiliar

The Water Dragon is not afraid.
It comes to the glass door and poses
in profile, displaying long tail,
strong body, sturdy legs,
and above all the head held high,
cocked, staring in. We are strange
exotic creatures to the Water Dragon,
I suppose. Or perhaps, after all, it is afraid,
keeping so still – frozen, so that we won’t
discern, it supposes ... do they suppose?

Lunch

She gives me vegetable soup
in a plastic box with two blue clips.
‘I’ve made it thick,’ she says.
‘You can add more water.
I just throw everything in
and hope it tastes OK.’

It’s still hot when I get back home.
It fills my big white bowl.
I don't dilute it, I eat it thick –
savouring the tastes
of carrot and spinach
and the texture of the potato.

Getting Through Winter

It's a help
that I have my cat —
the snuggler,
the smoocher —
to curl on the couch with me
as nights get colder.

He's old too,
aged along with me.
Survivors,
just we two
are all the family now
and we cling for warmth.

Waiting in the Long Heat

Waiting in the long heat
for help with my stranded car,
I raise the bonnet for shade
and perch on the bumper bar.

I settle and look up.
Blue sky and a beautiful tree
straight in front of my gaze
are sweet and calming to me.

August Wind

August wind.
Each year I forget
until it begins.

A sudden flurry.
'Is that rain?' I think,
but it's not. It's the air
stirring, no longer inert.

It wakes with a rush —
excitement or dread? —
and the blood responds.

Submitted for Poets United's Verse First ~ Difficulty. The challenge is: Write a poem, no more than three stanzas, that is completely free of "gratuitous, show-offy, camouflaging" text.
