Flowers x 3

In Day 20 of the April Poem A Day challenge at 'imaginary garden with real toads' the prompt is to write three short pieces on flowers, three lines or fewer.  I've posted them to this blog as I regard them all as 'small stones'. The first two are also haiku: one with the traditional 5-7-5 syllables, the other a short-long-short 'English language haiku'. I have used my own photos.

I'm also linking this post to Poets United's Poetry Pantry #447

    1. Thank you. That vine grows in my own garden, unlike the others.

  2. These are lovely, both the poetry and the photos. My favourite is the second 💕

  3. Each one is a delight. I especially love the bold statement in the first one.

  4. Hey rosemary. I like the grey twigs palings winter. Also the second one, I don’t see growing orchids as plain so it’s a delightful contrast. Great the way that follows from the first. The contrast in the last is much more subtle so you’re more obvious about it. Nicely done!

  5. I love these, especially "orange for joy". I have some orange tulips on my deck right now - so pretty.

  6. These are all evocative. I like the second one best too, as I don't think of a 'plain man' as one into orchids. Smiles.

  8. I love your word choices in the first... "trumpet" and "blare bright" make me think of fire, which goes perfectly with the contracts between the gray of the fence and the flaming blooms.

The second poem is perfect for orchids. Again, you do magic with contrast--there is nothing plain about a man who loves animals and mechanical things and flowers (just like there is nothing plain about orchids).

And the closing poem, alluring to the fact that everything has meaning... is just perfect!

  10. Oh blaring trumpets and passion roses are surely fine..but a man who loves dogs and grows orchids.. that's better than fine! :)

  11. I love that your flowers are a mix of haiku and that you’ve written them across the seasons, Rosemary. I especially enjoyed the contrast of the sudden blare of trumpet vines against the grey twigs, which enhances the wintry feel, and the plain main who grows orchids.

  12. Flowers are such fleeting things, so I think it's appropriate to celebrate them with the briefest of poetic forms: haiku. Lovely!

  14. Those trumpet vines! I miss the ones from the block where I grew up and this captures their glory. :) Also, orange roses for joy is a perfect link, the spark at the heart.

  15. I really like the first piece and the playful choice of trumpet flowers, which makes me think of royal heralds announcing a monarch.

  19. Beautiful photos. Lovely haiku. The 3rd one, in particular, is really wonderfully layered. Oh the places that red passion and orange joy took me.

  21. All are vibrant, Rosemary. My favorite is the last one.

  22. I enjoyed them all but really like the one about a simple man.

  23. I like all three and each for a separate reason. Together they create a wonderful garden to be slowly walked through, stopping often to just breathe in.

  24. great photo and words!
the second haiku reminds me of my maternal grandfather. he likes orchids, and whatever orchids he grows they bloom beautifully.
ah, small stones. i must revisit them more often. gotta bring a small notebook out with me. the phone is too troublesome to type when inspiration strikes. :)

  25. So happy to see these haiku from you. They evoke character, emotion, and yearning. (At least I'm yearning for some blooms to replace my snow.) Hope you are well, Rosemary.
